The UK hospitality industry needs its own dedicated government minister according to ALMR, the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers.
Speaking at the association’s annual conference, ALMR chief executive Kate Nicholls argued that clear action from the government was necessary to address the unprecedented level of political and economic instability facing the sector.
Brexit driven uncertainty and continuing cost increases are undermining business investment plans. With hospitality being the UK’s third largest employer, Nicholls argued that the time is right to appoint a dedicated minister for the sector; especially as issues important to ALMR members straddle different government departments including employment, planning, taxation, food & drink, tourism and others.
The government should show leadership and support to this vital industry by creating a new role of Hospitality Minister to ensure transparent and useful engagement with businesses and promotion of the sector’s interests.
