SMEs: Lifeblood of the UAE Economy

Following our recent commercial laundry series on Clean Middle East – Striving for Quality Standards in Middle East Commercial Laundry – Arpal Gulf have started a new series of posts discussing the role and importance of SMEs (small-and-medium-sized enterprises) in the UAE.

The opening article in the series, Lifeblood of the UAE Economy, argues that SMEs are the backbone of the UAE economy, a major source of employment, economic diversification and innovation.

With an estimated 350,000 SMEs employing 86 per cent of the UAE workforce and contributing 60 per cent to National GDP, more could be done to support the growth and competitiveness of the SME sector, especially in overcoming the barriers and obstacles when trying to win business from much larger organisations, e.g. centralised procurement policies favouring suppliers with global reach, attitudes towards risk, financial strength and so on.

In article 2, we discussed Six Main Benefits of working with SMEs:

  • Speed of response
  • Flexibility
  • Personal attention and personality
  • Specialised
  • Change and future readiness
  • Competitive pricing

The remaining two articles to be published soon will cover the advantages that SMEs have over larger competitors in delivering more agile and flexible customer service and the role of digital technology in levelling the playing field.

We will provide a short summary on the Arpal Group blog when published on Clean Middle East.
