We were delighted to attend the Family Business United (FBU) awards ceremony at London’s prestigious May Fair Hotel last week, where some of Britain’s outstanding family businesses gathered for the 2017 Family Business of the Year Awards.
Sponsored by Penny Hydraulics, we were humbled with being voted as one of two runners up in the Manufacturing Sector awards category won by HMG Paints, who also picked up the North & Northern Ireland regional prize as well as the overall Supreme Champion Family Business of the Year.
Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of Family Business United (‘FBU’) stated:
“We were delighted to pull together such a vibrant bunch of family businesses for the 2017 awards, some that have succeeded for numerous generations and continue to thrive, and others that are relatively young but have great values at the heart of what they do.”
FBU is a non-advisory organisation and as such works with professional advisory organisations and academic institutions around the world to source content and share events to enhance the knowledge available to family businesses and their advisers. As a collaborative multi-media outlet they work to share materials that matter, make a difference and help family business owners realise that they are not alone; that they can learn from the experiences of others.
From our point of view, family businesses are critical to the Scottish economy. It is disappointing that this is not officially recognised or given the attention it deserves in political, academic or media circles. Family businesses account for nearly 70% of all businesses in Scotland, 50% of private sector jobs and almost 45% of Scottish GDP.
On a national scale, according to the Institute of Family Business, 66% of UK businesses are family owned, 4.7 million in total, of which over 17,000 are medium and large businesses with many of these operating for hundreds of years.
Max Adam, RP Adam Ltd (Arpal Group) Sales & Marketing Director, says:
“Considering we are part of a business sector that employs over 12 million people, generates over 25% of total UK GDP and pays well over £100 billion in tax to the UK exchequer every year, we were delighted to be in such good company at the awards ceremony. The diverse companies that were represented was fascinating, but we all had common experiences, ambitions and a strong family business ethos. Well done to the winners and to Paul at FBU for championing our cause.”
